History

1995A growing need for an art museum was felt by the city government.
Acquisitions for the museum collection started.
1996
The body of works by ASAI Kan’emon and those by TAKUMI Hideo were donated.
Committee for Drawing Basic Plans for a Unique Art Museum was established. 
1998
The TANIUCHI Rokuro collection was donated.
1999
Yokosuka Museum of Art (tentative name) Project Outline was adopted by the city.
Funding for the museum collection was approved; collection building started in full-scale.
Yokosuka Museum of Art (tentative name) Basic Planning Committee was established. 
2000
Yokosuka Museum of Art (tentative name) Basic Plans were approved.
2001
Works by SHIMADA Shozo donated.
2002
Works by TSUKIOKA Eiki donated YAMAMOTO Riken was chosen through the Qualifications Based Selection process as the designer for the museum building; basic architectural planning started.
Works by NAKAMURA Koya donated.
A Museum Forum was held.
2003
Basic architectural planning was completed; Detail planning started.
Works by OKUTANI Hiroshi donated.
A Museum Talk was held.
Valleys was donated by its creator WAKABAYASHI Isamu. 
2004
Detail planning for the building completed.
The first issue of Yokosuka Museum of Art Pre-Opening Newsletter was published.
2005
Construction of the museum building started on January 11.
Yokosuka Museum of Art Activity Planning Committee was established. 
2006
The city’s legislation for the Museum was issued on June 14.
The museum building completed in July. 
2007
Yokosuka Museum of Art opens on April 28.
